STUDIOS - contacting studios

When it came to getting in contact with a number of studios, I decided to team up with Jenna on the course and message some places together. This was not only because of the initial fear of sending out e-mails, but also because we had a clear interest in the same areas of design. It was also suggested to us by John that we team up in order to get in touch with places. This way, travel and accommodation could be taken into account in terms of practicality. As we planned on getting in touch with some London studios, it made sense to do this as a pair, due to the stress of getting around the city and also splitting costs and expenses.

Before we started, we planned a model email that could be sent to the studios. This could then be amended depending on the studio, their location and type of work.

'Hello there!

We are Beth and Jenna, two second year Graphic Design students at Leeds College of Art. We have been looking around at your website, and are extremely interested in the work you are producing. We would love it if we could organise a suitable time to come and visit your studio over the Summer. It would be great to see how your studio is run, and see all the wonderful stuff you are creating! Really looking forward to hearing back from you.

Thanks,

Beth Hayden and Jenna Morse.

Within this, we made sure that we included our names, education, what we wanted, when we wanted it, our emails and a clear interest in their work and studio.

We then picked ten studios each that we were both interested in, making sure to consult each other and get each other's approval. We could then amend the model email for each studio it was sent to. I focused on Leeds based studios, whilst Jenna looked at a lot of London studios.

Below are the emails sent.

Vincent & Bell, the final studio I emailed, are a studio based in Carlisle, which is my hometown. I therefore emailed this studio on an individual level. They have worked alongside a museum in Carlisle called Tullie House, where I have previously undertaken some work experience. This was therefore mentioned in the email. They are extremely friendly on their site, and state to pop in whenever and they'll put the kettle on. I was therefore quite hopeful about receiving a reply from them.
