Whilst you still have the chance, there's no reason to not be doing something that you love. I don't think that you should worry about what other people are doing, as long as you love doing it. You shouldn't have to conform to anyone else's opinion of what is right or wrong. Don't doubt what you're doing either if you're having a great time doing it.
Work with your hands
I love working with my hands and having the time and patience to sit and hand craft something. I also love using "non-digital" processes and methods to produce an end product. For example, I love to paint, draw and create my own type. I feel that this shows care and consideration within design.
If in doubt get a second opinion
If you're completely stuck with an idea, a brief, a colour or so on, then simply get a second opinion. We are currently surrounded by so many like minded people that it would be a waste not to use them. Getting that second opinion will put your mind at ease and will allow you to relax and carry on working.
You don't have to be cool
Whilst I am aware of the trends, and what is considered contemporary design, I wouldn't conform to the rules of what people consider to be cool. It's easy to see someone doing something and to be inspired by that, but you shouldn't be designing simply to please the definitions of cool.
Make sure to always have a laugh
Having a laugh is a great way to keep stress levels down. Don't take things too seriously and you'll find that work becomes much more enjoyable and you will feel a lot more comfortable in what you're doing.
Make use of those around you
Collaborate! Work with those that you want to whilst you have the chance. Two minds are better than one and you can put a number of skills sets together to create something brilliant. Just make sure you can compromise.
A tidy room means a tidy mind
It is impossible to work when you are surrounded by mess. Try and keep organised and keep on top of everything otherwise it can drag you down. An easy place to start is by making sure that the area you're working in is clean and tidy, you'll find it much easier to concentrate this way.
Try and be curious
Don't think "What if?" just do it.
Keep everything just in case
I am a hoarder and tend to keep everything including notebooks, string, ribbons, fabrics, stamps, paper and so on. This may sound stressful but if I'm ever in need of something then I usually have it to hand. It's also a great starting point for inspiration, or finding something to incorporate into your work.
Just get off the computer
Don't get bogged down. Just turn your laptop off and go out and do something else.
