PRESENTATION - Intro to level6
After transitioning from second year into third year, I feel I have a much strong identity in terms of my work. I am starting to focus myself more in terms of my aesthetic and what I am interested in. I like working with my hands, crafting and applying print and pattern to products within a range.
Creating focus and direction
For this year, the main focus behind the briefs that I have picked is the opportunity to work with pattern, illustration and packaging. Although this will be over a broad range of sectors, I feel that this will help me expand on my current knowledge and skills, allowing for variety. I also like working with a consistent product range so this is something that my chosen briefs will allow me to do.
Chosen briefs
The briefs that I have chosen cover a variety of different sectors, visuals and interests, but will still allow me to create a consistent identity for myself.
Dog's Bollocks - The objective of this brief is to reinvent and reinterpret a famous brand. I felt that this would allow me to push my ideas and concepts further than I usually do, whilst also allowing me to choose a particular brand that reflects my interests.
Graze Box - This aim here is to make the Graze box more desirable. Graze currently work with visuals that interest me, in terms of using interesting stocks, illustration, type and packaging. This will give me the opportunity to craft a range of products by hand, alongside supporting material.
Room 101 - Room 101 is a famous TV show that invites celebrities to come on and dispose of something that they hate. This brief is asking for an illustrative interpretation of something that you would get rid of. I felt that this would allow me to explore my illustrative skills further, as well as exploring how I work with content that I dislike.
UK Greetings - This is a brief that I completed last year for the responsive module, however the outcome was solely digital. I therefore want to re-do this brief, creating a large product range, using some interesting processes.
Brabantia - The first brief I chose was Brabantia, which is a live competition brief that will allow me to focus just on pattern design. I will also be able to push this and create a range of products based around the print.
Marks and Spencers - I am hoping to do this brief as part of a collaboration with Jenna. I am looking forward to this as I have never worked with her before. I feel that I work effectively as part of a team, knowing when to compromise, and how to use each individual's skill set to create the best design. This will also allow us to improve our packaging skills.
Harry Ramsdens - Harry Ramsdens is a fish and chip restaurant that wants re-branding to be more fresh, exciting and relevant. I have never worked within this sector before and therefore I am looking forward to working on this brief.
Summer
Over summer I spent a month travelling around Europe, which was a truly great experience. It allowed me to absorb different cultures, and become inspired outside of my usual environment. It was a great opportunity to experience different design, visuals, pattern, print and colour.
Placements
I have been in contact with a number of studios already regarding visits, however I have struggled with finding a studio where I could picture myself being situated. Despite this, I just want to gain as much experience as possible, and visit a number of different places so that I can start heading in the right direction in terms of where I want to be.
Context of Practice
To work alongside my current practice, I am going to focus my context of practice on the production, distribution and social practices of zine making, exploring whether or not they have a future in today's society.
