EXHIBITION - Dialogue

The Brief

The objective is to encourage contributions for a week long, non profit pop up print exhibition and shop that will be held at the Leeds Corn Exchange in March 2014.
The theme of the exhibition is ‘dialogue’ where each creative will submit a design that will be used in a blind collaboration.Contributors must be open to their submissions being manipulated through the use of print and the match making process, that will pair two submissions together. This will create a series of screen-printed artworks that will be displayed throughout the running of the exhibition.

Dialogue Preview Night

Here are a handful of prominent images taken on the Dialogue Preview night. The images have been sourced from Yoke's Facebook page.

Evaluation

It was a great experience being a part of the Dialogue exhibition as it allowed for the opportunity to display my work to a wider audience, this meant that my work wasn't just restricted to it's usual environment.  It was great to see how the prints had been combined, and I really loved the designs that had been paired with my own print. I was extremely proud of Eve and Nathan and all the hard work that they had put into the exhibition. It made me much more aware that I should be trying to find more opportunities like this one where I am able to get my designs out into the real world. Although this brief was a quick turn around, I am pleased with how my design came out. If I were to do it again however, I would have liked to have experimented more with hand written type and I would have developed it further, exploring new visuals.

EXHIBITION - Work In Progress

A group of us were put together to work as a committee that would organise an exhibition for the course showing off our work. It was explained that with Graphic Design, it can sometimes be quite difficult to display outcomes in a way that shows their full potential. Amber therefore suggested that we turn the space into a working environment, where members of the public can come in and interact with a set up studio. We felt that this would be a really effective way of getting across what it is that we do.

We got together on a few occasions to discuss logistics, including what we would need in the space as well as what the exhibition would be called - Work in Progress. Instead of having an opening night as most exhibitions usually do, it was decided that there should be a closing night in order to give the space time to evolve and fill up with work. In order to document this happening, Greg set up a gopro in the space in order to capture the process until the final day of the exhibition. This video would then be shown on the closing night.

There was a few of us throughout January and February that worked in the space that we had created downstairs. Unfortunately  there wasn't as much physical work being produced as we had hoped because of the timing as it was smack bang at the end of our context of practice module. However, a number of individuals came down into the space to hang up work, which visually looked really appealing, bringing members of the university into the space to interact with it.

Below is the video that Greg produced:

EXHIBITION - Dr Me

Dr Me came in and gave us a live brief to complete as part of a collaboration. For this brief I was working with Katie, and the objective was to create a flag. The brief was very open, and therefore we had a range of initial starting points. We ended up basing our design on a lyric in a song by The National.

The flag was made up of two layers: fabric and acetate. The fabric layer was digitally printed, covered in a collage of flowers that we had produced using clippings from magazines. The acetate layer featured hand written type of the chosen lyric. These two were then layered up to create a new format for a flag.

Overall, we were extremely pleased with our design as we used a number of processes that we hadn't worked with before. It also evidently gave us the opportunity to see our flag within an exhibition space outside of the university.

This was a great opportunity for us, as it allowed us to work on a live brief with a studio. We were proud that our work was being displayed also, allowing it to be seen by individuals in the industry. This gave us the confidence to try and experience this situation more often. It also gave us a taste of what it is like to work for a client.
